Why We Chose Plant-Based Comfort Food

We didn’t start Sauce Tree with a master plan — just a deep love for flavor and a mission to make eating more sustainable.
Back then, we were delivering jars of homemade sauces, made with plant-based ingredients and packed with bold, familiar tastes. It was a small way of helping people enjoy food that was kinder — to their bodies, the environment, and yes, the animals too.

As our journey grew, so did the menu. We experimented with salads, frozen bites, and even catered meals. But no matter what we tried, we always came back to comfort food. Burgers, fries, skewers, pasta. The kind of food you crave. The kind of food that brings people together.

That’s how we discovered our direction.

We realized we’re not a raw vegan restaurant, and we don’t only serve health food. What we do is plant-based comfort food — made from whole ingredients like fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, grains, and spices. We use these to recreate flavors that are familiar, indulgent, and joyful.

But here’s the thing: explaining “plant-based” isn’t always easy. Many people confuse it with vegetarian, or assume it means a strict health regimen. We’ve had guests challenge the idea entirely — sharing how they’ve been eating meat for years and feel just fine. And that’s okay. We’re not here to debate. We’re here to feed.

Eventually, we asked ourselves a better question:

What did we love to eat when we were young?
What do kids today dream of when they’re hungry?

The answer was clear — burgers, nuggets, pizza, pasta. Classic comfort food.

So we chose that path. We believe that showing kids (and the next generation) that plant-based can be delicious, satisfying, and familiar is how we make change possible — one plate at a time.

Because empathy starts early. And good food leaves a lasting impression.
